The eastern tip (Strelka) of Vasilievsky Island is a freely accessible waterfront viewpoint where the Neva splits, framed by two 32-metre terracotta-red Rostral Columns built in 1810 to celebrate Russian naval victories. From the promenade you get one of the best panoramas in the city, taking in the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Winter Palace and the Neva embankments in a single sweep. It is one of the classic free spots for both photos and watching the river traffic.
